Every brand film looks effortless on screen and chaotic on set. This is the honest, scene-by-scene breakdown of a 90-second hospitality film we directed for a boutique hotel on Rajpur Road, Dehradun — how we got from a half-page brief to a film the owners now run as their hero ad on Meta and YouTube.

1. The brief — three sentences, ten questions

The client sent us three sentences: 'Make us look like a destination, not a hotel. Show the food, the suite and the lawns. Keep it under 90 seconds.' We replied with ten questions — who is the guest, what booking channel matters most, do we shoot staff, are pets allowed on camera, and so on.

That document became the creative brief. If you're hiring a production house in Dehradun, push for this conversation before you sign anything. Films made from a brief everyone agreed on, on paper, are 3× faster to edit.

2. The recce — light first, story second

We walked the property at 6:30 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. on the same day. Rajpur Road has a peculiar east-facing light that goes hot by 9 a.m. — we marked which suites kept soft window light the longest and rebuilt the shot list around them.

Recce notes also locked the drone window (early morning before the airspace gets busy) and the only generator-friendly corner of the lawn.

3. Shot list, crew and the one-page call sheet

Final shot list: 26 setups, 2 shoot days, 4-person crew (DOP, gaffer, sound, AD). We kept the rig deliberately small — a single ARRI-style key, two bounce boards, one cine prime kit. Lean crews move faster on hospitality sets where guests are walking through frame all day.

Every department got the same one-page call sheet with weather, sunrise/sunset, contact numbers and a tiny floor plan. Cheap insurance.

4. Production — golden hour for the hero, midday for the b-roll

Hero shots — the exterior, the lawn dinner, the suite reveal — were all scheduled in the 40-minute golden hour windows. Midday was for kitchen action, spa pours and detail b-roll where flat light actually helps.

We shot in 4K log on a Sony FX6, with a second body on a gimbal for movement. Sound was double-system, lavs on the staff we featured, plus ambient stereo plates of the gardens for the edit.

5. Post — the edit decides everything

First assembly was 2 minutes 40. The 90-second cut took three rounds — we lost two beautiful shots that didn't serve the booking journey. That's the hardest, most important part of post.

Colour was a warm filmic grade with lifted shadows, finished in DaVinci Resolve. Sound design used a custom layered bed — birds, distant cutlery, a single hang-drum motif. The film exports as one master plus 6 platform cut-downs (15s, 30s, 60s, vertical, square, captioned).

6. The result — and what we'd do differently

Direct bookings from the hotel's Instagram tripled in the first 60 days. The owner's only regret: not letting us shoot one more day of staff portraits to spin off a second campaign.

If you're planning a brand film in Dehradun, Mussoorie or anywhere in Uttarakhand — budget for the recce, fight for the edit, and protect the brief.
